The Positive Fashion Initiatives Changing London Fashion Week For The Better.

London Fashion Week prepared guests from 49 different countries to see over 100 designer businesses. The most anticipated fashion shows include emerging brands A.W.A.K.E. Mode, Victoria Beckham, JW Anderson, Erdem, Christopher Kane, Roksanda, Preen, Nabil Nayal and Mary Katrantzou the more established Roland Mouret and Margaret Howell and big brands Vivienne Westwood, Burberry and Mulberry.

In addition to the incredible designers presenting this season, the British Fashion Council (BFC) took the opportunity to further its Positive Fashion initiative, a platform designed to celebrate industry best practice and encourage future business decisions to create positive change.

We have a valuable platform in London Fashion Week to celebrate and move forward initiatives.

Caroline Rush CBE, Chief Executive, British Fashion Council

This includes The Model Zone, a safe undisclosed wellness center for models, a special award from the Queen of England gifted to one of London’s most innovative sustainable designers, and a unique new partnership between the BFC, BBC Earth and sustainable design brand Mother of Pearl.

The Positive Fashion Initiative focuses on three key areas:

  1. Sustainability
  2. Equality & Diversity (with a special new model welfare program)
  3. Craftsmanship & Community

SUSTAINABILITY – The UK fashion sector contributes an estimated £32.3 billion to the UK economy and supports 890,000 brands. To ensure a positive future for the industry and the job holders BFC is dedicated to focusing on social, environmental and business governance to drive a more sustainable and ethical fashion future. Through the power of collective influence, the Positive Fashion committee of global brands, designer businesses and industry stakeholders will drive change through best practice.

EQUALITY & DIVERSITY – Championing the importance of every person in the sector as a vital and valuable part of the British fashion industry, the BFC strives to represent equality and diversity on the global stage. This is a commitment to engage and support industry workers from the product makers to the staff, students and models who pioneer the brands and are entitled to be treated with respect and dignity.

CRAFTSMANSHIP & COMMUNITY – To support the wealth of talent and capability that is unique to British designer businesses, the BFC is committed to encouraging and developing deeper connections and understanding between the designers and manufacturers to ensure the long term viability of the craftsmanship sector.

Below we highlight 5 amazing Positive Fashion projects from the BFC and London Fashion Week:

BFC x BBC Earth X Mother of Pearl Positive Fashion Project #SustainableMe

The British Fashion Council are working with BBC Earth, the team behind the hugely influential Blue Planet series and Mother of Pearl.  In the first event of its kind, this collaboration brings together the global reach of the BBC and the influence of fashion through a BBC Earth x British Fashion Council x Mother of Pearl talks series with industry visionaries and thought leaders at London Fashion Week.

The focus of the talks will be centered on the impact the fashion industry has on the planet while highlighting the positive tangible opportunity for sustainable fashion choices and mindful consumer behavior.

London Fashion Week February 2019 Fur Free

February 2019 will mark the second London Fashion Week that the catwalks and designer showrooms at the event will be fur free.

Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design at LFW

For it’s second year the Queen Elizabeth II Award will go to the talented sustainable designer Bethany Williams. The Award recognizes her creativity in design while embedding sustainability and community practices within the business.

The QEII Award for British Design will be presented on Tuesday, February 19th to Bethany Williams by the Duchess of Cornwall.

Model “Safe” Zone at London Fashion Week & London Fashion Week Men’s

Every season the BFC hosts The Model Zone, which is advertised backstage at every show both at LFW and LFWM. It is space for models to eat, drink and relax and its location is not publicly advertised, so that it remains a safe space away from the main event. Therapists are also available for treatments daily.

Fashion Switch To Green

In February 2019 twenty brands and businesses committed to the British Fashion Council and Vivienne Westwood’s Fashion SWITCH To Green Campaign. The project is designed to bring the fashion industry together to lead in ambitious climate action, for a safer and greener future. The campaign asks industry leaders to commit to SWITCH to a green energy supplier by 2020. The year 2020 significant, tying the campaign to the Paris Agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
