Topics Trending The TFP Office: #TimesUp, Hollywood Against Sexual Harassment

Trending the TFP Headquarter talk this morning was the #TimesUp hashtag trending twitter. Actresses like Meryl Streep and Jennifer Anniston donated some $500,000 to a new legal defense fund to fight sexual harassment, and the #timesup hashtage was linked to the news all over the twitter-verse. The topic was brought up after we began picking apart Dave Chappelle’s apparent defense of Kevin Spacey on his new Netflix special.

“Kevin Spacey’s out here grabbing men by the p***y! I didn’t even know that was possible!”

Dave Chappelle

Chappelle’s entire comedic shtick around the topic in his Netslix special sort of diminished the #MeToo movement’s importance. The New York Times article this morning said it best, “Chappelle has always been more savvy and engaged on race than on gender”. We agree.

Anyhoo, this topic veered off into the #TimesUp hashtag primarily because none of us thought anything could top the #MeToo hashtag as a call to action. But it turns out we were WRONG.

Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon, and Shonda Rhimes all donated $500,000 to the #TimesUp legal fund. Furthermore, singer Taylor Swift  and media mogul Oprah Winfrey both donated $100,000. And actresses Natalie PortmanCate Blanchett, Emma Stone, and Jessica Chastain donated $50,000 each.

The money will be used to raise awareness about sexual harassment in the workplace in all industries. And it will provide financial legal support for women fighting against harassment and abuse in their workplaces.
