Earlier today Rihanna’s lingerie brand, Savage x Fenty by Rihanna, released the mood for their show tonight and it is a little bit … unruly.
In order to understand what this meant we watched an earlier mood video released right before it. It begins with a professional woman, conservatively dressed, circa the 1960s, which initially seems a bit out of place for the Savage x Fenty brand and then she says:
“We know that beauty and brains are not mutually exclusive. We know that we can be as competent in the bedroom as the boardroom. We know that.”
The video pans to Rihanna in a floral headdress, wearing Savage x Fenty lingerie and a pair of bright, lemon yellow lace gloves with two fat crystals dripping from her fingertips. She couldn’t be more different than the woman before her ..
Other models, of all shapes and sizes, also appear in Savage x Fenty lingerie lounging in a floral menagerie, communing only amongst themselves. It isn’t necessarily an inviting setting, but it is very empowering.
The videos together send a message to women that you are all you need to throw off the strictures of piety and the shackles of judgement; and just embrace your womanhood.
This idea stays in line with the brand’s ethos:
“Women should be wearing lingerie for their damn selves … I want women to own their bodies.”

As for the collection, the clips are very dark except for flashes of bright acidic color. The spurts of light make it easier to discern the style and textiles used for the designs. Only one style is shown in the mood videos, a triangle bralette in a lace textile.
As for the bright acidic colors, Rihanna is staying in step with the neon color palette so popular during New York Fashion Week SS19.
