Velvet has always been a luxury fabric. Difficult to produce, woven of lustrous silk, simple on the back, thick and soft on the front and with a naturally deep rich sheen, velvet has only ever been available to the wealthy. And for this reason velvet constantly falls in and out of fashion, also the very sight of velvet traditionally implies some formal occasion. But this season designers from large labels and small boutiques chose to weave velvet into their collections.
For fall/ winter 2018-19 Mes Demoiselles, a small fashion label you can find on the Rue Cambon in Paris, designed a complete collection in trendy velvet – including day and night designs – in deep amethyst and sapphire. They also employed the lovely jacquard velvet in paisley prints. Other textiles used in the collection are silk, patent leather, shimmering satin, mink and sable fur and chunky wool for sweaters.
The Mes Demoiselles lookbook is styled in a casual way clearly inspired by the simple and chic French girls you’d pass on the streets of Paris. The designs would look incredible on Emma Stone or Priyanka Chopra.
