After Deadly Shooting, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High Requires Students Carry Clear Backpacks In School.

Rupert Runcie, Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, announced yesterday that only clear plastic backpacks will be allowed in the Stoneman Douglas High School once students return from Spring Break. This drastic change comes after Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida experienced a deadly shooting where a gunman, a former student, killed 17 people. The story was reported by Arabella Sicardi an American feminist, student and queer beauty writer.

The New York Times story about the change included the letter from the Superintendent to the families of Stoneman Douglas High imposing the rule. Reminiscent of security measures at airports and professional sports venues, the letter stated any student without a clear backpack would be provided one.

Students from the high school have taken to Twitter and Instagram to express their outrage over the new policy.

The new rule is supposed to be a move to keep students safe but to many it feels like a punishment impugning their right to privacy and skirting the real issue, gun control.

Liberalism supports navigating crisis in any way possible but don’t get it twisted you can’t shop your way to safety and gun control this is a band-aid, a pathetic one actually, and if the change isn’t systemic it’s not change at all if it just supports the delusion one can buy your way out of a systemic problem.
