Fashion’s current preoccupation with artisanship made the leap from admiration to genuine patronage thanks to J.W. Anderson. Within a year of taking the reins at Loewe, one of the world’s most prestigious fashion brands, Anderson, 32, launched an annual craft prize at a global level. And recently announced the coveted 2017 Loewe Craft Prize shortlist.
“Craft is the essence of Loewe and I want to make sure we increase employment at Loewe and across the globe, but I think brands have an obligation and if we don’t collectively support and nurture these things, crafts will start to disappear. Yes, there will be a winner, but it’s also about creating a global platform.” -J.W. Anderson, 32
The prize acknowledges the importance of craft in today’s culture and recognizes the skills of artisans whose talent, vision and will to innovate set a standard for the future.

The 26 finalists, spanning all ages, were selected by a jury of experts comprising textile, jewelry and ceramics designers, as well as journalists.

The winner of the Loewe Craft Prize receives 50,000 euros and the winning work will be exhibited alongside all shortlisted entries in Madrid, Tokyo and New York.
