Today on the Golden Globe official twitter account the HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) announced sustainability measures for the traditional ceremony. The changes are small but they are in line with what’s trending in other organizations. The 77th Golden Globe awards will restrict single-use plastic, upcycle the red carpet, and for the first time, serve a plant-based menu. According to The Hollywood Reporter the new Golden Globe sustainability push is just getting started.

Of all their good deeds it’s the plant-based menu that has the Golden Globe awards trending on Twitter. The new vegan menu consists of a first plate of chilled golden beet soup with locally grown chervil and amaranth and a second plate of king oyster mushrooms with wild-mushroom risotto, roasted baby purple & green Brussels sprouts, globe carrots, and pea tendrils.

The HFPA also announced they will upcycle last year’s red carpet. This is a monumental sustainability trend primarily because the red carpet is an iconic emblem. Stars walk the red carpet as a precursor to the show. In addition to the fashion coverage, the celebrity interviews generate news coverage for weeks, even months after the show.

Another notable change is the HFPA partnership with Icelandic Glacial Water to serve water in glass bottles instead of plastic. When asked about the new sustainability measures HFPA president Lorenzo Soria replied, “the climate crisis is surrounding us and we were thinking about the new year and the new decade. So we started talking between us about what we can do to send a signal”.
