Rihanna’s Fenty Cameo Series Is A Major Status Item.

Fenty unveiled a new accessories collection inspired by a beautiful, timeless piece of jewelry: the cameo. The Fenty Cameo comes from an ancient jewelry design, traditionally hand-crafted in precious materials. Historically, cameos are most associated with wealth and privilege. But the fenty pieces celebrate the cameo as an emblem of fearlessness, creativity and joy — FENTY’s brand tenants.

A bit of Cameo History

In ancient times both men and women wore cameos to depict an ethic or moral, or to make a statement about their faith or their heroes. Grecian women were said to wear Eros cameos to signify their desires.

By the 16th century, during the Elizabethan period, cameos with a classic female profile became a fashion statement. And women began collecting cameos to show social status.

Fenty’s New Cameo

The Fenty Cameo series continues a number of these traditions. They are hand-sculpted in black resin and glass, and embellished with tiny pearls, Swarovski crystals, and glass beads.

And the cameo features a beautiful black woman’s profile, to celebrate a contemporary new hero.

The collection — which retails between $340 and $530 — includes a set of rings, a pair of earrings, and pendants that can also be worn as brooches.

To showcase the new accessories, Rihanna commissioned Nigerian photographer Ruth Ossai who is known for her portraits inspired by traditional African studio photography. Ossai captured models standing shoulder to shoulder in Fenty dresses and wearing the new cameo series.

The Fenty Cameo collection dropped this month and is currently available online at the Fenty website. View the Fenty Cameo savoir-faire “behind the scenes” and see how the texture comes to life in the sculpture.

Editor’s Note:

The Fenty Maison is part of the LVMH conglomerate which has made headlines lately for their commitment to female empowerment. Earlier this year, LVMH partnered with Stella McCartney creating an in-house sustainability department McCartney runs. And now LVMH is at it again supporting Fenty’s exceptional jewelry line celebrating black women and promoting new standards of beauty.

It is worth noting LVMH’s noticeable strides to support women run maisons and their creative ways to contribute positively to this issue.
