IKEA is the latest brand to launch a sustainable design initiative. At the Democratic Design Days in Älmhult, IKEA announced they will reduce their climate impact through a circular design model.
The program calls for an upcycled design process using innovative and recycled materials, and employing artisanal crafts techniques so designs last longer. Their intentions are to become people and planet positive by 2030.
“Becoming truly circular means meeting people’s changing lifestyles, prolonging the life of products and materials and using resources in a smarter way. To make this a reality, we will design all products from the very beginning to be repurposed, repaired, reused, resold and recycled”
Lena Pripp-Kovac, Sustainability Manager
If IKEA stays on course they could potentially reduce more greenhouse gas emissions than they emit, drastically reducing their climate footprint.

According to a statement from Inter IKEA Group CEO Torbjörn Lööf they will adapt their value chain to collaborate with local raw material suppliers to further reduce their carbon emission numbers.
“Change will only be possible if we collaborate with others and nurture entrepreneurship. We are committed to taking the lead working together with everyone – all the way to our customers and partners.”
Torbjörn Lööf, IKEA Group CEO
