Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) has pulled out of her commencement speech at the University of California, Berkeley in solidarity with the university’s workers, who are striking over gender pay inequalities and providing higher wages.
Senator Harris’s office issued the following statement to graduates:
“Due to the ongoing labor dispute, Sen. Harris regretfully cannot attend and speak at this year’s commencement ceremony at UC Berkeley. She wishes the graduates and their families a joyous commencement weekend and success for the future. They are bright young leaders, and our country is counting on them.”
The strike was called last week by American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299, which represents 25,000 service workers, after the union and the university could not agree on a new contract and mediation efforts failed.
