Today LVMH announced Off-White designer Virgil Abloh as Louis Vuitton’s new artistic director. And as you would expect, Virgil Abloh has already given an official statement about the announcement. In an online post released on British Vogue this morning, Abloh says:
It is an honor for me to accept the position of men’s artistic director for Louis Vuitton.
He goes on to say that the heritage and creative integrity of the house will act as “key inspirations” he will reference while designing a collection that fits in modern times, blah blah blah.
But to his friend and fellow designer Angelos Frentzos, who Abloh worked with as the creative director for Kanye West’s music tour, he responded more openly.
When Angelos Frentzos congratulated him this morning on his new gig as designer of one of the oldest and most powerful European luxury brands in history Virgil Abloh realistically responded with, “Aghghhh. Verry surreal”.
What if all new designers felt free to answer more openly, wouldn’t that be cool? We expect him to be nervous, this is a big deal. Hopefully he can translate that nervous energy into a stellar collection. But we will have to wait and see what he puts on the catwalk for the Louis Vuitton menswear collection this June.
Virgil Abloh, good luck and congratulations! Aghghhh!
