It saddens us to report that Marielle Franco, a woman who dedicated her life to fighting against racism, prejudice and police violence in Rio de Janeiro was assassinated after leaving a women’s empowerment event last evening in Brazil. There is speculation that she was executed by the police. Residents took to the streets in major cities by the thousands to mourn and protest.

Brazil has been plagued with government crime and corruption. Marielle Franco was perceived as a strong voice against injustice for black people and marginalized people in Brazil. Her assassination is a tragedy and a significant blow to the country.
