What am I going to do with this “Oprah 2020” jersey? That must be one of the questions on the lips of thousands who’ve just learned that Oprah has announced, officially, she is not going to run for President next term.
The words came straight from Oprah’s lips from a live SuperSoul Conversation podcast taping in New York City on Wednesday. Senior features writer Arianna Davis reported that Oprah Winfrey and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the man behind the 11-time Tony Award winning musical, Hamilton, were in the middle of discussing the importance of authenticity when you’re pursuing what you’re passionate about when Oprah revealed her intentions.
“I’m not running for office!” he said. To which Oprah responded, “I’m not either!” At that was that. Hopes are dashed.
After cheers and applause from the audience, Miranda added: “I’d argue Oprah is a more powerful position than president.”

Speculation about a potential Oprah 2020 presidential run reached a fever pitch after her rousing speech at the Golden Globes in which she declared: “I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon!”
After becoming the first black woman ever to win the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes ceremony, Oprah Winfrey’s speech on gender and racial equality while calling for the end of sexual harassment and assault had people eagerly discussing the possibility of a President Winfrey. And the “Oprah 2020” merchandise appeared shortly after online.
The Hill reported that coffee mugs and sweatshirts with Oprah 2020 printed on it, vintage T-shirts with “Vote For Oprah” on the front, shirts that say “Oprah For President — Time’s Up!” were selling like hot cakes.
Oprah may have dashed the dreams of many that she would run but we can keep the hopeful memories with an awesome tee.
“Obama 2020” has a nice ring to it. What’s good Michelle?
