How To Adjust Your Skin Care Routine For The Winter Months Ahead.

Often times we neglect to properly transition our skin care routines from fall to winter. And with harsher weather conditions the skin becomes duller. In the colder months, humidity levels drop with the temperature and there is literally less water in the air. And although cell turnover doesn’t actually slow down during the winter months – skin cells do ‘die’ faster as they dehydrate.

Never fear, this isn’t a cause for panic.  Remember, adjusting your skin care routine is as natural as adjusting your wardrobe. And these 6 steps will help brighten, soothe, hydrate, and protect your skin in the months ahead.

Bring On The Oil

Dry winter skin needs a whole lot more TLC than its warmer weather counterpart. So we recommend adding a protective layer from wind and outside forces. While oil won’t hydrate the same way a cream or ointment would, the best way to use face oil is to incorporate a few drops of it into your moisturizer so you get the benefits of a moisturizer and face oil.

Look for products containing healthy beauty oils such as shea butter, olive oil, licorice root extract, emu oil and hemp. All of these ingredients are easily absorbed into the skin and will not cause breakouts. These are two great choices:

Incorporate Moisturizing Mists

One of the simplest and most effective secrets for warding off dry winter skin is to incorporate a moisturizing mist into your beauty arsenal.

Though it may seem counter-intuitive, the best method for locking moisture into the skin is to apply your serums, lotions and oils to slightly damp skin. Misting your skin before application will actually help the ingredients in your lotions and serums penetrate better for maximum effectiveness – and your dry winter skin will love you for it!

Misting sprays are also great for setting your makeup and to keep your skin well hydrated when flying. Here are some great options:

Exfoliate Frequently

Leading experts are always on the fence about exfoliating frequently or sparingly. We’ve found that in cold harsh weather the subsequent dehydration of our skin requires a consistent practice of exfoliation that will remove the dead skin cells and promote absorption of the nutrients applied.

Very gentle, regular exfoliation over the next few months will most certainly lift away these dead cells at the surface, to reveal the healthy skin underneath.

Keep Your Showers Short And Not Too Hot.

All of the dermatologists feel that an ideal temperature for winter skincare is lukewarm. Water is not hydrating to your skin. It can be the enemy if you have dry skin. It’s the natural oils that you want and water washes natural oils away. Excessively hot water also dehydrates the skin.

If the water you use on your skin is too hot, it will dilate capillaries in order to cool itself, resulting in redness. That is not good for the complexion so try to keep showers short and keep the water tepid!

Don’t Skip The Sunscreen

Even the dreariest of winter days require the need for UV protection. Though many people believe that sunscreen is not necessary all year round, the sun’s damaging UV rays are just as powerful during the winter months. As such, we all need to protect our skin from potential damage and discoloration, and even cancer.

Watch Your Water Consumption

No matter how much cream we slather on, our skin will suffer enormously if our bodies are dehydrated. And with the lack of humidity in the air during the colder months and the harshness of our central heating systems, it’s just as easy to get dehydrated as it is in extreme heat.

Please keep in mind that the type of water consumed is equally (if not more) important than the amount consumed. Filtered, mineralized water is the best choice – the more alkaline the better, as acidic water is not well absorbed by the body and can exacerbate dehydration.
