The LOOP Festival (Barcelona): A Celebration Of The Moving Image

Cinema Lovers! From the 18th to the 27th, Barcelona will be breathing video!

The benchmark international moving image festival LOOP Barcelona will be celebrating its 15th anniversary from May 18th to the 27th. This year’s festival takes a revisionist slant on video art broadening the list of activities, exhibitions, installations, screenings, awards, performances and new conferences. The festival’s primary focus is to take a a look back into great contemporary works from the early days of video for the purpose of interpreting current audiovisual production and its influence on NexGen moving image artists.

“From the 18th to the 27th, Barcelona will be breathing video”, says Carolina Ciuti, the LOOP Festival Coordinator.

In a first, LOOP Barcelona events will happen in venues throughout the city. The press conference hosted by Òscar Abril, Director of Cultural Sectors and Innovation at the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona (Barcelona City Council), stressed that “the festival is breaking new ground by occupying a host of spaces and reaching numerous points in the city”.

The festival’s focus is to reclaim video works through a look back at contemporary visual artists from the past such as Eugènia Balcells, David Hall, Beryl Korot, Chip Lord, Mary Lucier, Antoni Muntadas, Nam June Paik, Carles Pujol, Steina and Woody Vasulka, and Peter Weibel, as well as key figures in monographic works like Andy Warhol (with Silver Songs. The Music of Andy Warhol, a set of over sixty record covers from 1949 to 1987 showcasing the history of pop music in the second half of the 20th century and the artist’s most significant moments), Martha Rosler (acclaimed for her videos, photo-texts, performances, installations and art and culture critique), Tony Oursler (a pioneering multimedia artist), Antoni Miralda (renowned for his large-format installations embodying a non-conformist, festive, ornate and kitsch language conjoining art and life), and Robert Cahen (a famous video artist, photographer and composer). Together they will be offering a broad panorama of the myriad uses to which video has been put since its inception.
