First Look Inside The New Spa At The Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Lake Como.

The Grand Hotel Tremezzo is the former location of an art nouveau treatment center originally opened in 1910 as a hotel by Enea Gandola and his wife Maria Orsolini. In the 1930s the Sampietro family took over the hotel adding an exclusive spa facility. Greta Garbo put the hotel on the map in the 1932 film Grand Hotel. When ownership changed hands again to the de Santis family in the mid-1970s the hotel was renamed The Grand Hotel Tremezzo.

Valentina de Santis is the third generation to own and operate the luxury hotel and spa. Her first order of business when she assumed control was to update the facilities and bring the historic monument into the 21st century.

De Santis hired local architecture firm Venelli Kramer to renovate the hotel’s spa and adjoining villa. The architects began by turning a narrow and largely unused arched passage under the hotel’s main entrance into the Espa-partnered T Spa which includes a 15m infinity pool and a sundeck with views across the lake.

Venelli Kramer inserted a treatment area and changing rooms underneath the building, again working with existing unused spaces, adding lashings of black Venetian marmorino, back-lit Persian onyx, vertical timber cladding and bespoke wooden furnishings creating a clean-lined, luxurious grotto.

The architects then advanced on what was formerly a fitness area set in on the detached Emilia villa to create a new T Spa suite. The 18th-century, three story villa located adjacent to the spa facilities now has three treatment rooms, a hammam, a nail bar, a relaxation room and a specifically created new guest suite. The hammam has a raised massage platform, steam room, sauna, tub and rain shower. A special space for couple’s massage includes a whirlpool, sauna and Turkish bath.

The villa’s beauty area has three wood-clad treatment cabins with teak flooring and handcrafted wooden furnishings. The Mosaico Studio is a nail bar named after the refurbished Venetian mosaic floor. The bespoke manicure tables are tailor-made in grey oak. The furnishings inside the Veneto inspired nail bar include a Flexform gold marble table, Minotti armchairs and a Penta chandelier.

The villa also houses the Emilia Suite for those who do not want to stray too far from the spa facilities. It offers private access to the spa and also includes an oversized whirlpool, a double rain shower and its own steam room lined in Lasa marble.
