Megyn Kelly, Lupita Nyong’o, Julianne Moore were among honorees at this year’s NY Power of Women luncheon hosted by Variety magazine. The event celebrates the philanthropic efforts of industry leaders.
“We are honored to provide a platform that celebrates the outstanding women in entertainment who support and promote philanthropic causes making the world a better place to live,” said Variety publisher Michelle Sobrino Stearns in a statement. “Variety’s Power of Women NY is now in its third year in the city and we are excited that once again Lifetime will be joining Variety to fete those individuals who inspire us all to go beyond ourselves.”
Misty Copeland was honored for her commitment to the American Ballet Theatre’s initiative to diversify America’s ballet community, Project Plie. Last summer, Copeland was promoted to principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre, the first African-American dancer to earn that top ranking in the company’s history. “I’m just so happy there are little girls that can look at me and see themselves,” she said on Friday afternoon.
Nyong’o was recognized for her work with Mother Health International, which aids pregnant women and children in need. Moore was honored for her support of gun violence prevention org Everytown for Gun Safety. Wang supports The Youth Anxiety Center, which sources expert researchers to provide treatment for anxiety disorders. and Kelly for her work with Childhelp, which cares for child abuse victims.
Emmy-winning actress and producer Mariska Hargitay received the Karma Award for her philanthropic work as founder and president of the Joyful Heart Foundation. “Powered By” sponsor Karma Automotive presented Hargitay with the award, which honors an an individual who uses their influence in the entertainment industry to promote a philanthropic cause.
Variety’s Power of Women event is associated with its annual Women’s Impact Report, which profiles women who make a significant impact on the entertainment industry. Each of this year’s honorees were featured on the cover of Variety’s New York Women’s issue on April 5th.
