Fog Island Inn Is A Bold And Stylish New Boutique In Canada’s Largest Fishing Port City.

Fog Island Inn in Newfoundland, Canada

Fogo Island Inn was designed by Newfoundland-born, Norway-based architect Todd Saunders. The 43,000 square-foot Inn is perched on stilts hugging the North Atlantic coastline. The Inn’s architecture is bold, optimistic, and distinctly of this place. All 29 suites face the ocean and have unobstructed views of sea and sky.

The inspiration behind stilts is a distinct nod to traditional outport fishing stages. These stilts or “shores” underpin many of the buildings on Fog Island due to the rocky, undulating topography. They support the structure while also minimizing the overall building footprint and impact on the adjacent rocks and lichens.

The smallest side of the building contains a series of public facilities, including an art gallery, a library dedicated to local history, a cinema, a gym and various meeting and dining areas.

Fogo Island Gallery has presented solo exhibitions by Kate Newby (New Zealand), Zin Taylor (Canada), Silke Otto-Knapp (Vienna), Hannah Rickards (England), and Edgar Leciejewski (Germany). All exhibitions in the gallery are accompanied by a publication focusing on each artist’s work, produced by Fogo Island Arts and Berlin’s Sternberg Press.

The four-story structure runs parallel to the seafront and accommodates the 29 guest suites. The top two floors are reserved as suites. The majority of the rooms come with their own wood-burning stoves, and three of the rooms feature a mezzanine floor. The deck on the roof offers saunas and outdoor hot tubs.

The dining room is one of the Inn’s most iconic spaces. It features a dramatic vaulted ceiling and looks out over the ocean with views of the Barr’d Islands in the distance.

The lounge and bar areas feature a signature line of new Newfoundland cocktails which play off longstanding traditions. Mixologists combine them with new techniques.

The Inn’s beverage team are constantly dreaming up new creations using the flavors of the Island: garnishes such as Fogo Island berries, juniper-infused syrup, and dried wildflower petals.
