Today marks the inaugural opening of the British Museum of Food, “the world’s first cultural institution entirely devoted to the history, evolution, science, sociology and art of food.”
The British Museum of Food (BMoF) is the brain child of creative London based duo Bompas and Parr, the team behind alcoholic architecture, also known as The Alcohol Cloud. The BMoF will be a fitting addition to their creative portfolio situated above the unique bar in London’s famous foodie center, Borough Market.
The museums 2,500 sq ft space aims to “fundamentally change peoples’ lives by helping them consider what they eat, where it comes from, how it gets to the table… and what happens when it’s inside the body.”
Two exhibitions currently on display:
Be the Bolus: A Food Journey
This exhibition is a digital journey through the alimentary canal into the stomach. In this cinematic display visitors become the food as it passes through the mouth, down into the oesophagus, into the stomach, past the pyloric sphincter and into the large intestine. A graphic yet educational installation meant for the stout of heart.
This chocolate filled room is a sweet delight. The space is stuffed full of chocolate in recipe variations for visitors to taste. The educational component of the exhibition is the chocolate-inspired soundscape that hypothesizes the way in which chocolate impacts our lives. Visitors are encouraged to eat chocolate and describe how it tastes while being hit with different sonic blasts.
The British Museum of Food
