The runway in the Foundation Louis Vuitton was lined with video screens, blank until the show began, with a reference to the popular game Minecraft. A computerized voice introduced the Spring 2016 show as “A journey to the frontiers of the digital era”. The destination of this journey was unknown, maybe to some virtual parallel universe or to some underground nightclub. Louis Vuitton offered no final destination but instead encouraged each woman to set out on her own adventure.
Before the show the Foundation Louis Vuitton buzzed with activity as fashion editors and celebrities gathered in attendance. Celebrities included names like Michelle Williams, Alicia Vikander, Doona, Kelela, Xavier Dolan, Grimes, and Miranda Kerr among others. Poised outside the Foundation Louis Vuitton walls, and inside the alternate universe created by creative director Nicholas Ghesquire, celebrities patiently attended to the eager snaps of the paparazzi.
Backstage models received transformative looks. For the beauty at Louis Vuitton models wore their hair down with tiny braids and the makeup looks featured a manga-esque play on a cat-eye.
The collection presented the Louis Vuitton girl as a heroine passing through various sartorial levels and multiple atmospheres. With every world that our heroine experiences, she seeks to answer a question. Gender fluidity? Modern romance? The power of the body? Absolute femininity?
The bag shapes introduced on the catwalk included top-handle steamer totes, drawstring backpacks, and micro-size trunk shapes offered in a virtuoso of hardware and software materials.
Among the many black lug-soled shoes on the runway was a chain-detailed pair of slingback mules worthy of any self-explorations.
