Conscious Rap Single ‘Question Time’ Wins ‘Best Contemporary Song’. Is This A Trend?

Teenage rap prodigy Dave wins Best Contemporary Song at the Ivor Novello Awards at Grosvenor House in Mayfair, London for his politically conscious rap single ‘Question Time’ (taken from last year’s critically acclaimed ‘Game Over’ EP).

Dave’s win for ‘Question Time’, which touches upon varies hot topics from the conflict in Syria to privatized healthcare, is an achievement that comes hot on the heels of Dave’s Best Newcomer win at last year’s MOBOs and a Best Newcomer nomination at this year’s Brits.

Dave is part of a new wave of conscious rap music in the hip hop music genre. This year the Kendrick Lamar album ‘Damn’ merited a Pulitzer Prize award for the heavier meaning in its lyrics. The Billboard Hot 100 also reflects the growing popularity for conscious rap artists like Lamar and J. Cole who are climbing the charts.
