From 7th – 27th September 2016, Greek marble atelier on•entropy will participate in London’s first ever Design Biennale exploring the theme ‘Utopia by Design’.
Pairing with Greek administrative body, the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports, dynamic sisters Niki and Zoe Moskofoglou – founders of on•entropy, together with a team of designers, including the Emmy-winning lighting designer Eleftheria Deko and graphic designer Domnika Gregoriades – will transform two rooms within the prestigious venue into a marble landscape, complete with a solid 1.1 tonne Pentelikon block which will take center-stage.
Visitors over the 20-day period will be transported to Mount Pentelicus, the birthplace of the stone used to construct Athens’ iconic Parthenon in 447 BC and modern-day Greek National Library & Opera by Renzo Piano.
Viewers will be invited to explore the depths of this timeless landscape via projected imagery that recreates the feeling of being within the engrossing quarry at Dionysos, 40km northeast of Athens.

Symbolizing the motion within Utopian life of the 21st century, this social and discursive installation focuses on movement, mobility and migration, exploring what it means to be ‘in transit’.
Through design, the sisters emphasize the cultural landscape in a Utopian world that is the quarry; through its materiality – the marble objects designed for Somerset House – they highlight the merging of culture and nature.
On•entropy comments, “We attempt to make sense of place, by mapping belonging and collective values in a globalised age. We are looking into Utopia from a traveller’s point of view, and how to make values visible in this search, across the journey”.

Marble, as a solid element, sets the backdrop and provides a foundation for the Utopian narrative to take place, the stone serves as a useful metaphor for the shifting social and cultural patterns caused by population and material movements. A landscape, its imperfections, veins and natural flaws render the marble’s strata a map in itself with deltas, uneven terrain and infinite routes.
