United States President Donald Trump and the House GOP abruptly pulled a vote on the Republicans’ health care plan today minutes before it was scheduled to begin. For many Americans this is a good thing. This means that pre-existing conditions are still covered. The major cuts to Medicaid which would have led to 24 million Americans without health coverage is gone. And basic health care rights for women including reproductive choice rights and maternity benefits are no longer in jeopardy.

After weeks of contentious negotiations among politicians, nation wide protests by the American people and constituents flooding their state representatives with concerns over the American Health Care Act (AHCA), Republicans were forced to admit defeat as they could not gain sufficient support to overhaul US health insurance.

The decision means that for now, at least, Obamacare will remain in place until Republicans can come up with some plan that can overcome deep intra-party divisions about how to kill it.

A chilling thought given that Obamacare seems to work.
