Louis Vuitton Objets Nomades: An Ode To The Natural World.

Louis Vuitton is most known for their luxury fashion and accessories collections but the maison began as a luggage company. For over 200 years the world’s elite have coveted Louis Vuitton’s travel trunks and accessories. The founder, Louis Vuitton, rose to fame as the personal box-maker and packer of the Empress of France. In 1854 he opened his Maison and introduced the first rectangular travel trunk to the public markets. But unlike his competitors he designed his luggage in canvas instead of leather. The smart design was stackable, the material more durable, and it was waterproof. In 1867 Louis Vuitton won a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle, an international exposition organized by Napoleon and held in Paris. And so began the inspiration for the Louis Vuitton Objets Nomades (Travel Objects) Collection.

Louis Vuitton Objets Nomades Collection

The Louis Vuitton Objets Nomades collection are limited-edition, collectable furniture and décor pieces inspired by the House’s travel DNA. The special collection weaves together Louis Vuitton’s savoir-faire and the skills of world-renowned designers to create inventive shapes, materials and products. The ever expanding assembly includes pieces imagined by some of the most creative designers of our time including Patricia Urquiola, India Mahdavi, Atelier Oï, Atelier Biagetti, Marcel Wanders, Tokujin Yoshioka, Nendo, and André Fu.

The Swell Wave Shelf

Last month at Design Miami Louis Vuitton unveiled the latest addition to the collection, the Swell Wave Shelf created by Andrew Kudless. The San Francisco-based designer’s new piece unites biologic, geologic, and human made forms. It is an ode to the powerful forces and delicate balance of the natural world. The new Objet Nomade features undulating, smoothly polished oak shelves that resemble rocks eroded over time. They are held in perfect tension by rich Louis Vuitton leather straps.

The Swell Wave Shelf is an elegant addition to the collection in that it eloquently combines Louis Vuitton’s remarkable design aesthetic and intelligent functionality.
