Founded in 1985, Berluti remains one of the world’s premier cobblers. The brand is firmly grounded in bespoke design, technical skill, and creative flair. And in addition to shoes and accessory designs, Berluti presents customized design projects during Design Miami and Art Basel Miami Beach to stretch their skill set. This year, Berluti’s creative director Kris Van Assche and François Laffanour of Galerie Downtown will present a small series by Swiss Architect Pierre Jeanneret. The original 1950s pieces once furnished the Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex in India. For Design Miami, François Laffanour and Berluti restores and upholsters the pieces with Berluti’s emblematic Venezia leather.
The idea comes from Kris Van Assche who is a collector of Pierre Jeanneret pieces. Before taking the creative lead at Berluti in 2018 Van Assche already made a link in his mind between the furniture of Pierre Jeanneret and Berluti’s DNA; colour and patina.
I have always loved and collected Pierre Jeanneret’s furniture. And I knew that the Berluti patina know-how would give back all their splendor to those iconic pieces, aged through time. It is an opportunity for this Berluti craft to be rediscovered in a new context.Kris Van Assche
The Berluti X Laffanour Galerie Downtown series consists of 17 original Pierre Jeanneret pieces and includes a base building desk, easy armchair, a pair of cinema chairs, high court chair, kangaroo chair, judge armchair, a pair of library chairs, folding screen, day bed, a pair of committee chairs, public bench and a blue writing chair.
Each piece was numbered at the time of manufacture, and additionally Berluti numbered the new leather elements. The series will be presented at Art Basel Miami Beach from December 2 to 8, 2019.
