Even after last year’s technically glitchy New Year’s Eve performance Mariah Carey is confirmed to return and sing for ABC’s famous live television event, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest. And it’s for a good reason, who could possibly replace Mariah Carey? Mariah Carey is the diva that rules the holiday tunes. Last month Gwen Stefani released her first holiday album and told ET, “I want to be Mariah Carey,” Stefani said. “I mean, she’s the one who just…she killed it, you know what I mean?”
But last year in Times Square Mariah did not kill it at Dick Clark’s New Years Eve event. In fact, it was one of the worst performances of the Holiday Diva ever. In case you don’t remember, nearly everything that could go wrong on live television happened to Carey in her three-song set last year. Carey recounted the disastrous evening saying her monitors and sound equipment stopped functioning properly mid-song and although she attempted to push through she ended up holding the microphone away from her mouth and interrupting the song with cries of “Happy New Year!”
Following the mishap, Carey’s team said she couldn’t hear her cues and alleged that Dick Clark Productions sabotaged her performance for the ratings. Dick Clark Productions eventually admitted to technical errors.
But all of that is hopefully behind us as Mariah Carey returns. And hopefully we will hear the most beloved holiday songbird belt the world’s most popular holiday tunes as we ring in New Years 2018.
