The Japanese brand TOOT presented its FW 2019 collection on Sunday afternoon. The wall to wall display of clothed male models in their underwear can be daunting to review, but not for this reviewer.
Let’s be honest there hasn’t been any major updates in years to male underwear design in the way of construction, detail or look. TOOT changes that with an innovative and stylish new brief inherently designed to favor different body types.
The presentation with it’s variety of models displays the importance of fit, and the press release reinforces the idea by explaining how TOOT sizes each model for each design. TOOT recommends you select underwear based on the size of your hip rather than your waist, as the measure around your hip determines how comfortably the underwear will fit.
This is a new approach and it is something men will need to consider when buying underwear. Your hip is what secures your underwear along your body, and the waist should sit correctly on the area where you can feel your waist bone. In theory this is a more comfortable fit even for those who sport a little too much stomach.
TOOT designs are made from natural fibers including cotton and silk. The creative director Idea Shinagawa searched for progressive artisans to create the stitch detail which requires advanced sewing techniques.
TOOT’s elaborate and diverse display serves its purpose to highlight a man’s undergarments as the most important garment. This will be taken seriously especially by the sophisticated man who wants more than ordinary underwear.
