Women’s March 2018: Events Leading Up To The Rally Sunday, January 21st.

Key Points:

  • Marches take place amid a US government shutdown.
  • 2018 marches are part of a campaign to get 1 million people to register to vote.

On Friday, the president addressed the ‘March for Life’ rally in the Rose Garden of the White House as Mr Trump moves on reproductive health and his anti-abortion stance. Today, over a million women around America and the world took to the streets for the 2018 Women’s March, one year after the first women’s march was held in opposition to newly elected US President Donald Trump.

Demonstrators surged into the streets in protests in American cities across the country, with parallel rallies in Europe, Asia and Africa turning the event into a global affair. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti wrote on Twitter that 600,000 people turned out for its rally. According to local media reports, organizers said some 300,000 people attended the rally in Chicago.  New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office said 120,00 people attended a protest there.

And while the inaugural 2017 marches functioned as a primal cry against Mr Trump’s election victory, the 2018 iteration serves in part as a nationwide political rally. Elected officials and celebrities are out with demonstrators urging attendees to channel their energy and frustration with Mr Trump’s policies into the midterm elections, where women hope to fill seats with diverse representation in Congress, governorships and state legislatures.

The Women’s March protests today lead to the rally scheduled on January 21st in Las Vegas. Thousands of women, femmes and allies will come together again to celebrate one year of resistance and to launch a collective 2018 Women’s March agenda: Power to the Polls.

Nevada has recent experience with some of the most pressing issues facing women in the United States today, from gun violence to politicians accused of sexual assault. As a swing-state that will shape the Senate in 2018 and as home to a strong activist network, Nevada is the perfect place to commemorate the Women’s March and continue building their electoral power.

This anniversary event will kick-off a national voter registration and mobilization tour targeting swing states to register new voters, engage impacted communities, harness the collective energy to advocate for policies and candidates that reflect the values and collaborate with woke partners to elect more women and progressives candidates to office.
