A federal judge formally, and permanently, issued a block on an Arizona law which banned ethnic studies from being taught across the state, after conservative lawmakers and educators went after a Mexican-American studies class being taught in Tucson public schools.

Russia

Meet opposition activist, and presidential candidate Ksenia Sobchak who announced she will run in the country’s presidential election next year. Ksenia Sobchak says she wants to unite those against Vladimir Putin, since announcing the journalist has been subject to harsh scrutiny. Russia will hold a presidential election on 18th March 2018.

Ramallah, West Bank (Palestine)

16-year-old Palestinian Ahed al-Tamimi, who was awarded the ‘Hanzala Award for Courage’ in Turkey, appeared in court yesterday after she was taken into custody by Israeli soldiers, at Ofer Prison in Ramallah.  As of today she remains in prison.

New Delhi, India

Police used water canons to disperse BJP supporters who protested against the water tariff hike and tried to march towards Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwals residence, in Civil Lines, in New Delhi, India. The Delhi Jal Board has approved a combined 20 per cent hike in water and sewer charges in the capital for consumption of over 20,000 litres a month.

Lucknow, India

Women affiliated with the Muslim Rashtriya Manch exchanged sweets to celebrate the tabling of the Triple Talaq bill in Parliament at GPO in Lucknow, India. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017, which seeks to criminalize the practice of instant triple talaq (ability to instantly divorce your wife), was tabled in a bid to secure women’s rights and justice.

Liberia, West Africa

Former football star George Weah is elected President well ahead of opponent Joseph Boakai with more than 60% of the vote. He will succeed Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female president, in Liberia’s first democratic handover in decades.
