Gisele Is “Wild For Life”

Gisele Bündchen is taking part in the United Nations’ “Wild for Life” campaign against the illegal trade in wildlife, driving a large number of species to the brink of extinction.

The model took to her social media accounts to share the campaign, which features a futuristic image blending her portrait with an image of her kindred spirit, a sea turtle.

“Much of the world’s wildlife is facing extinction. To overcome this we need a radical change in people’s attitude all over the world, so today I’m joining the fight to save these endangered species,” Bündchen said.

“It saddens me that in the 21st century, with all our knowledge and power, we are still hearing stories of wildlife facing the possibility of extinction at the hands of man. It is clear to me that a radical global shift needs to occur and it will take everyone accepting the challenge to support the UNEP Wild for Life campaign. Knowledge is power and now is the time to set our minds to ending all illegal wildlife trade before the choice is no longer in our hands.”

The “Wild for Life” web site allows users to find which extinct species is their own kindred spirit by answering a personality quiz. It also offers information about all the different species facing danger of extinction. Bündchen urged her fans to take the quiz and join her in raising awareness.

The campaign launched at the second U.N. assembly in Nairobi this week. It features several high-profile individuals including models Gisele Bundchen and Nadya Hutagalung, actresses Nikki Reed, Li Bingbing and Jacqueline Fernandez, actor Ian Somerhalder, singer Thu Minh, footballer Yaya Touré and representing the Middle East, Lebanese singer Ragheb Alama.

By gathering key opinion leaders and raising awareness of such environmental and development risks “Wild for Life” aims to enforce stronger laws and support local communities in their efforts to stop illegal trade.

The 34-year-old Brazilian model, who revealed last April that she is quitting the runway, has also been acting as a United Nations environment program goodwill ambassador since 2009.
