Los Angeles based designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy founded fashion design label Rodarte in 2005. The sisters, who co-design the eponymous brand are lauded for the conceptual, and highly innovative, fashion inspirations.
And the artistic designers, who’ve recently announced a collaboration with The Rug Company, want to explore other art forms. The talented sisters penchant for crafting whimsical creations is well executed in the capsule collection. Their artistic approach to design and their ability to find inspiration in the unusual are among the keys to the success of their label and would aid them as they move into the interior design world. The California influence also plays a large part.
The four statement-making rugs—Ivy Trellis, Ember, Cobalt and Marble—are entirely handmade using the age-old weaving techniques for which The Rug Company is known, and are expressions of the designers’ interests and inspirations.
The Cobalt Rug is inspired by blue and white porcelain and 1970s Northern California interiors (an homage to the girls’ childhood memories), and features an alternate version in a porcelain-inspired central motif.
The landscape of America’s Death Valley is the influence behind the Ember rug, which features hand-knotted Tibetan wool in earthen colors to reflect the barren scenery of the iconic locale.
The Ivy Trellis Rug (above) design is inspired by the fairy-tale fantasies and medieval romance shown in the Rodarte Spring 2015 Collection .
The stylish rugs, which range in size from 5’x 3’ to 18’ x 12’ are priced between $123 and $224 per sq ft, and are available through The Rug Company showrooms and online.
