High jewelry studios now look beyond precious metals and gemstones to source for inspiration. Today principle objects for bespoke jewelry can range from meteorite pieces and ‘Druzy’ crystals to marine elements and ancient fossils.
The 33 earthly jewels featured below are unlike anything you’ve likely seen before including mammoth ivory, soon to become illegal in the fight against elephant poaching, to gold dipped beetles an ancient Egyptian tradition.

Most of these materials are rare or controversial. The Lito beetles are real insects. The design comes from an ancient tradition, Egyptian soldiers commonly wore scarab beetles into battle as the beetles were considered to have supernatural powers of protection.
