Award shows don’t often recognize young television series’ but Issa Rae’s portrayal in Insecure was so relatable and impactful that the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences nominated her for an Emmy for ‘Best Actress in a Comedy Series’.
If you’ve never watched Insecure, a comedy-drama set in California, you are missing out. Episode endings often result in viral twitter discussions.
In fact, Insecure‘s freshman season ending sparked a fun but heated discussion between former First Lady Michelle Obama and show creator and lead actress Issa Rae during an event.
Don’t worry, it ended amicably with a hug and a lot of smiling.
The show follows Issa Dee (Rae) navigating the professional and personal terrain alongside her best friend Molly (Yvonne Orji). Issa works as a youth program coordinator at a nonprofit and lives in South LA.
She is a flawed person who makes mistakes, faces the consequences and lives with the fall out. And unlike formulaic ‘single woman’ TV shows there is a distinct lack of neurosis idolizing other people’s lives. Issa and her friends make a conscious choice to be their best, most authentic selves.
True to living in a vibrant city, the characters take us all over Los Angeles, from Inglewood to the Arts District. And like anyone else they shop at Rite Aid, eat at neighborhood restaurants, attend cultural events, socialize with friends, and they date.
The show’s take on love and relationships is just as layered and complex as the characters work drama and friendship drama. Insecure explores open marriage, lifeless relationships, long-term boyfriends, dating apps, ex-boyfriend drama, new girlfriend drama – it’s a constant struggle.
Fans are hopeful and excited for the third season (there is an ex-ex situation) and we are too. Also we have our fingers crossed Issa Rae wins her first Emmy.
