The best photographers in fashion have a way of capturing the zeitgeist of our culture, of documenting history in a new way and of taking fashion photography and film in unanticipated yet important directions. They also have a distinctive and unique style which can not be replicated by any other.  Frankly, there are only a few names working in fashion photography today who show this kind of potential, Petra Collins is one of them.

She made her first big splash in the fashion industry for Gucci. The video maker created a short presentation for the Gucci SS 2017 eye-wear collection. Petra acted as an art director and film director for the campaign. She created a surreal and oneiric tale, set like an autobiography, through a colorful, imaginary and free world. It was one of gucci’s most iconic presentations.

Before Gucci, it was Petra’s good friend Tavi Gevinson who first commissioned Petra in 2011 for Rookie Magazine. In an interview with Oyster Magazine Tavi talked about what made Petra Collins so unique.

Petra’s photos depict the private moments of her young female subjects with a unique sensitivity to unexpected beauty – thousands of young women identify with her documentation of female friendship, sexuality and self-discovery.

Petra’s latest work for CR Fashion Book features “Bodak Yellow” rapper Cardi B. The 25-year-old photographer captured Cardi B in a way we’ve never seen before. The images are compelling and soft while maintaining Cardi’s strength and glamour.

Petra lensed Cardi B in Saint Laurent, Alexandre Vauthier and Gianvito Rossi looks, all styled by Ron Hartleben. The headline grabbing images immediately sparked positive engagement, even those who are not Cardi B fans were charmed.

The cover speaks to Collins’ aesthetic as a dreamy, hyper-feminine photographer whose girl gaze empowers young woman. And thanks to her distinct feminist aesthetic she has become one of the leading voices of the movement.
