Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi welcomed a new boutique hotel last spring complete with a luxury treatment spa and Michelin-starred chef.
The Hemingways Hotel joins two other private hotel ventures in Kenya: one in Ol Seki Mara and one in Watamu. The luxury hotel in Nairobi includes 45 suites each with a private balcony overlooking the Ngong Hills.
A dedicated butler is assigned to guests at check in. Rooms are lavishly decorated with plush furnishings in mahogany wood, porthole-style mirrors, and black-and-white framed photos. Bathroom interiors feature hand-cut Italian marble, a double vanity, and walk-in wardrobe.
There is a treatment spa catering to customized facials and pressure-point foot massage. There is also a full salon for impromptu manicures, pedicures, and hair styling.
Michelin chef Barry Tonks developed a molecular-gastronomic menu. Tonks sources local foods such as fruit, vegetables and artisan cheese but fish is flown in daily from the neighboring Watamu, including wahoo and Lamu spiny lobster.
Meals at the brasserie range from locally sourced steaks prepared in Kenya’s only Josper oven to vegetable-based entrees. For afternoon tea, between 3 pm and 5 pm daily, flutes of Champagne are poured as a pairing for opera cake, finger sandwiches, macaroons, and fruit tartlets.
